Daihatsu Company Overview
Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese automaker primarily known for its small compact cars both in Japan and elsewhere in the world. Though founded in 1907, it was under the name, Hatsudoki Seizo Co., Ltd., and would not assume its current moniker until 1951.

Daihatsu made its first foray into the U.S. car market with the "Trimobile", a three-wheeler based off its domestic "Midget" minivehicle. In the mid-Eighties, it would fully enter the U.S. market with the establishment of Daihatsu America, Inc., in California. Cars sold in the U.S. include the Charade hatchback and the Rocky mini SUV. Unfortunately, late entry into the highly competitive market, no local manufacturing plants (all Daihatsus were manufactured in Japan), and even a lawsuit with the producers of the "Rocky" movie, led to the automaker's withdrawal from the U.S. in 1992. This was despite the high ratings from J.D. Power and Associates on such issues as customer satisfaction.
Daihatsu is also a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Co., which owns over 33 percent of the company's shares. Many Daihatsu vehicles are sold worldwide under the Toyota brand and name. The automaker continues to focus on small vehicles in such markets as Southeast Asia. Because of its history in electric car development, the automaker is heavily involved in developing a low-cost, practical electric car such as its electric "Hijet" concept first introduced in 1977 at the Chicago International Electric Vehicle Expo.
