AM General was created to develop vehicles for the United States government. The brand secured a contract with the U.S. Army in 1983 to build the Series High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (the now famous Humvee) to replace the aging M151. The brand would design and develop a civilian version, the now (in)famous HUMMER, in 1999, with U.S. automaker General Motors. While AM General manufactures HUMMERs for the company, GM does not own any part of the automaker. Instead, it owns the HUMMER brand name and is responsible for sales and marketing of the SUV.
AM General continues to produce Humvees for the military and the now HUMMER H2 for General Motors. The original HUMMER, which was renamed the H1 by GM, has been discontinued. The H3 is currently built by GM, which has expanded the brand into the European market.
