2014 Toyota Yaris
2014 Toyota Yaris

New for 2014

Though the 2014 Toyota Yaris is relatively unchanged from the previous model year, daytime running lights and a new stereo are now standard.

Vehicle Overview

Slotting in below the compact Corolla sedan, the Toyota Yaris is the automaker’s subcompact hatchback, available in two- or four-door forms.

Summary

All 2014 Toyota Yaris models come standard with the 1.5-liter I-4 that makes 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. Buyers get a standard five-speed manual, which gets an EPA-estimated 30/38 mpg city/highway, or an optional four-speed automatic that gets 30/35 mpg. The Yaris gets nine airbags as standard equipment.
The 2014 Toyota Yaris four-door hatchback received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and in IIHS testing received a rating of good in four categories (the highest-possible rating is good), but received a rating of marginal in the new, more difficult, small overlap front test. The two-door hatchback has not been evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS.

What We Think

In a First Drive of the 2012 Toyota Yaris we noted that the car "needed to kick down a ratio or two when any kind of incline was present or when a passing maneuver was called for. We recommend the manual transmission, where the driver is fully in charge of gear selection.” In an Editor’s Notebook review for a 2012 Yaris SE we commented that the Yaris, “doesn't take enough of a step forward to keep up in this increasingly competitive segment.” Another criticism is that, while fuel economy would have been great years prior, when midsize sedans with automatics are getting 34 mpg on the highway, a subcompact should be doing notably better than 35 mpg.
You’ll Like
  • Fuel economy on manual-transmission-equipped model
  • Versatile hatchback body
  • Proven engine/transmission combo likely to be reliable
You Won’t Like
  • Dated carryover engine/transmission
  • Fuel economy is uncompetitive with four-speed auto
  • No standout features compared with segment
Key Competitors
  • Honda Fit
  • Nissan Versa
  • Kia Rio
  • Mazda2

2014 Toyota Yaris SE Rear View In Motion
Toyota will replace the mediocre Yaris subcompact with a new model that to be produced alongside the next Mazda 2, according to a report from Automotive News. This report says that Mazda’s new plant in Salamanca, Mexico, will produce around 50,000 vehicles per year for Toyota when the next-generation Mazda 2 begins production in 2015.

Summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Yaris vehicles manufactured August 31, 2011, to February 9, 2015, and sold in Puerto Rico. The affected vehicles may have been manufactured with a roof headliner that does not provide the proper occupant protection in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 201, " Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
Consequences
If the vehicles are equipped with a headliner that does not meet the impact requirements, there is an increased risk of occupantl injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headliner, free of charge. Owners were sent interim letters on April 28, 2015. Owners will receive a second notice when parts become available. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
