2013 Toyota Tundra

New For 2013

The Tundra essentially carries over unchanged for 2013. The luxurious platinum package is now a distinct trim level. It includes heated and cooled leather seats, navigation, and a sunroof.

Overview

The Texas-built Tundra is in some ways a symbol of a time Toyota would rather forget. It was born out of a desire to match the huge sales and profit margins of American competitors. The Tundra never lived up to that expectation, and Toyota has refocused much of its attention back to the cars it does best. All of this is rather unfair to the Tundra itself, which is a solid, honest pickup truck. There are three engines, three body styles, two bed lengths, and a veritable laundry list of options. Things start off strong, with a base 4.0-liter V-6 that puts out 270 hp and a good midlevel option with the 310-hp, 4.6-liter V-8. Still, we’d say the 381-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 with variable valve timing best suits the Tundra’s mission, especially if you’ll be towing heavy loads; the maximum towing capacity is 10,400 pounds when properly equipped. Both V-8 engines team with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Tundra’s only real shortcoming—aside from the fact that it’s simply not exceptional enough to tear people from their Fords, Chevrolets, and Rams—is its empty-bed ride quality. It also hasn’t received quite as many yearly tweaks and updates as have its domestic competitors. For instance, the Tundra’s interior was exemplary when it debuted in 2007 but has fallen behind its American competition, particularly the Ram.

Safety

Front, side, knee, and side curtain air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; trailer-sway control; and a tire-pressure monitoring system are standard. Backup sensors are optional.

You'll like:

  • Lots of available V-8 power
  • An honest-to-goodness pickup from Toyota

You won't like:

  • Relatively poor ride quality
  • V-8 fuel economy trails that of its competitors

2013 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 4x4 Front Left Side View 1
May 21, 2013, about 1271 miles. The Toyota Tundra doesn't compare to a Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500 or Ram 1500. This has proven to be one segment Toyota that simply can't crack, even though the Tundra has much of the qualities of American trucks. Like the Tundra of the past, it's still a between-size vehicle, only more like a commercial-grade heavy-duty grade truck than a light-duty personal pickup, It's a big, lumbering torquey V-8-powered tool, the kind of vehicle that holds no charms for me unless I need to move or haul something, and I didn't this week. To me, the low-rent interior makes more sense than spending fifty-thou ... yee-gads, it's $40,000? Where? How? No wonder Toyota dealers can't move these.

2014 Toyota Tundra Spied Profile
These spy photos show the 2014 Toyota Tundra testing with a heavy dose of camouflage, but it won't be long until we see what lies beneath the tape and cladding. Toyota confirmed to us that the 2014 Tundra will debut next week at the Chicago auto show.
Pro Bass Anglers Ultimate Fishing Tundra Front
Toyota is tying in Baja California and bass fishing to its off-road-ready SEMA show cars this year, courtesy of its FJ Cruiser SUV and Tundra truck. While one show car is wild and extreme, the other seems ready for the showroom.

Summary
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
Consequences
If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
Remedy
Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Summary
Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Consequences
An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
Remedy
Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (GST) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Toyota Tundra vehicles modified by GST as part of certain vehicle packages to be equipped with a combination of non-Toyota-brand 20-inch alloy wheels and chrome plated lug nuts.
