2012 Toyota Prius V Five Front Left View
Toyota's Prius family is growing. The Prius V is bigger in every key dimension than the stock Prius, and the company just unveiled the smallest Prius ever, the Prius C, which will cost less than $20K and get more than 50 mpg. We haven't yet driven the Prius C, but I'm going go out on a limb and project that Toyota will have done a better job of shrinking its ultrasuccessful Prius formula than it has in enlarging it.

A partnership between BMW and Toyota Motor Corp. may be in the works – one that would see both automakers collaborate on lithium-ion batteries for hybrids and EVs. Based on a report from Reuters, it seems the two automakers will tackle the dilemma of making batteries lighter and less expensive together, a move that would help spread the cost of development. An official announcement of the partnership is expected to be made at a joint press conference held this Thursday at the Tokyo Motor Show.
2012 Mitsubishi I MiEV Front Three Quarter
The Environmental Protection Agency has issued its list of the most fuel efficient cars available for the 2012 model year, and, sadly, there are very few surprises. The entire list is composed of electric and hybrid cars, with nary a diesel- or tradition internal combustion-powered car to be found. Toyota is the biggest winner here, claiming four of the ten spots with the Toyota Prius (number five), Prius v (number 7), Camry Hybrid LE (number 10), and the Lexus CT200h (number eight). Honda also nabs two spots with the Civic Hybrid ranked at number six and the Insight at number nine. The full list, including electric and plug-in electric vehicles:
  1. Mitsubishi i-MiEV, 126/99 mpg city/highway
  2. Nissan Leaf, 106/92
  3. Azure Dynamics Transit Connect Van, 62/62 (electric Ford Transit Connect)
  4. Chevrolet Volt, 58/62
  5. Toyota Prius, 51/48
  6. Honda Civic Hybrid, 44/44
  7. Toyota Prius v, 44/40
  8. Lexus CT 200h, 43/40
  9. Honda Insight, 41/44
  10. Toyota Camry Hybrid LE, 43/39
As you can see, the EPA chose to include full-electric and plug-in electric vehicles in their data. However, if you excludecars like the Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Volt, the list changes slightly. Tying for the number eight spot without electrics are the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The amended list also gains its first non-hybrid with the Scion iQ ranking at number nine, thanks to its 36/37 mpg city/highway rating. The Honda CR-Z hybrid rounds out the electric-free top ten. Summary
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
Consequences
If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
Remedy
Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS
Summary
Genera Corporation (Genera) is recalling certain aftermarket replacement tail lights, model 11-6468-00 (driver-side), and model 11-6467-00 (passenger-side), sold for use on 2012-2013 Toyota Prius V vehicles. The brake light and tail light circuits are switched causing the brake lights to be illuminated continuously until the brake pedal is pressed, when the brake lights will go out.
Consequences
The reversed tail lamp function reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Genera will notify owners and provide replacement aftermarket tail lamps, free of charge. The recall began on January 23, 2014. Owners may contact Genera at 1-888-963-9888. This recall is being conducted by Genera Corporation, not by Toyota Motor Corporation.

HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM: INVERTER
Summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Prius V vehicles manufactured August 22, 2011, to June 30, 2014. A component within the hybrid inverter assembly may overheat, causing the hybrid system to reduce output power allowing the vehicle to only drive a short distance. In some circumstances, the hybrid system may shut down causing the vehicle to stop while being driven.
Consequences
The vehicle may enter a fail-safe/limp-home mode that limits the drivability of the vehicle. The hybrid system could also shut down completely resulting in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the motor/generator control electronic control unti (ECU) and the hybrid control ECU, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in late July 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.
