2011 Toyota Highlander
2011 Toyota Highlander
Toyota has expanded their SUV line and is now offering many different varieties to tend to all of their consumers needs. The Toyota Highlander has been a fan favorite for a long time and is the midsized member of the Toyota SUV family. Since its inception in 2001 the Highlander has offered a combination of high quality interior accommodations and a very rugged truck capable of any off road task given to it. The newest generation of Highlander is slightly longer and wider that the first gen, but still fits into the midsize class. The base model is setup to seat five passengers, but there is a 7 seat version in a higher trim level. The 2011 Highlander offers 3 different engines, but comes stock with a 2.7 liter 187 horsepower engine and a six speed automatic transmission.

For those who are power hungry the Highlander can be fitted with a 6 cylinder engine offering up to 270 horsepower and a 5 speed manual transmission is also available. The top trim level introduces the new continuously variable transmission that removes the need to shift altogether for a totally new driving experience.

This is not an attractive vehicle. The headlight protrusions that are proud of the sheetmetal are particularly odd. Just because you can design headlights any which way you wish doesn’t mean that you should. I bring up the styling mainly because so many of the Highlander’s competitors are reasonably attractive, from the Chevy Traverse to the Mazda CX-9 to the Kia Sorento.

The Highlander could be a poster child for cars that grow larger from generation to generation. The current Highlander, which debuted in 2008, is four inches longer, three inches wider, and more than 400 pounds heavier than its predecessor. More important, it looks and feels it. Whereas the previous Highlander felt reasonably nimble and maneuverable, the current version feels heavy and overgrown. Contributing to that impression is the Highlander’s steering, which feels dead on center but becomes overly -- and irregularly -- heavy when you turn the wheel. Despite its heft, the top-of-the-line Limited 4x4 has no shortage of passing power from its 270-hp, 3.5-liter V-6.
2011 Toyota Highlander Profile
Forget the white picket fences -- it seems contemporary American families dream of transporting their 2.5 children in a vehicle that is both relatively fuel efficient and decidedly not a minivan. As a result, the midsize crossover market has boomed in this country, and will likely to continue to do so for some time to come.

The color of our test car -- Toyota calls it sandy beach metallic but it’s really just a drab beige -- did it no favors. The Highlander is already a vehicle that is somewhat lacking in visual substance, and this color made it look even more boring, to my eyes.

November has been looking good for some major automakers, but not Toyota. Sales for the company were down 7.3 percent in November, and up 0.6 percent thus far in 2010.

A refreshed version of Toyota's popular Highlander crossover has debuted in Russia, of all places, at the Moscow Auto Show. The revamp gives the three-year-old Highlander fresh headlights, bumpers, taillights, and a restyled front grille.

Summary
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
Consequences
If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
Remedy
Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Summary
Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Consequences
An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
Remedy
Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.
