2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara
2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara
The Grand Vitara is one of the few true small SUV's still available. It attempts to drive on that fine edge of off road ability and on road comfort. The older model did this on a body on frame chassis that was more truck like in construction. The new model is a unibody as in a car, but including a ladder frame and full 4 wheel drive. These features can make it a good selection for both daily driving around town or the occasion departure from the road. The Grand Vitara is available in both rear and all wheel drive. Multi range 4 wheel drive is also available. Seating is adequate for 5 people and a nice list of standard features is included.

Power for the Grand Vitara comes from a choice of engines. A base engine is available with 166 HP 2.4 liter four cylinder which can be mated to a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic transmission. The upgrade engine is a 3.2 liter V-6 providing 230 HP and routing its power through a 5 speed automatic transmission.

Suzuki's Grand Vitara has to be the most under-the-radar vehicle on the market. Despite that, this is a credible entry for small SUVs. The driving experience is by no means class-leading, but it meets expectations.

I forgot just how much I missed Suzuki's small, utilitarian SUVs until I stared longingly at a pristine LJ-40 at this year's Chicago auto show.

Yes, the Grand Vitara is something of a throwback and is one of the few compact crossovers that wouldn't wet itself during an off-road excursion. Of course, most people buying small SUVs these days are really looking for a tallish station wagon, and by those standards, Suzuki is behind the curve. Its interior is rather crude, a mix of old General Motors parts and the fakest faux wood I've come across of late. The Grand Vitara goes down the road well enough, with decent V-6 verve, but its skittish steering and slightly tippy feel as it goes through corners won't appeal to the Honda CR-V crowd.

On the face of it, $27,000 seems a bit steep for a small Suzuki SUV, but this Limited V-6 is fully loaded. (A four-cylinder model is also available.) The Grand Vitara's weakness when it was introduced back in the late 1990s was its powertrain; it originally had an anemic V-6. Now its 230-hp 3.2-liter does deliver the goods: acceleration from 75 to 90 mph is more than adequate. But it still lacks the sort of auditory refinement that you would find in a Honda or Toyota engine.

Just over a year ago, Subaru was a niche automaker known for quirky vehicles that often lacked direct competitors. Led by the Forester for 2009 and then with the Legacy sedan and Outback wagon for 2010, Subaru's product offerings have recently fallen in line with mainstream markets. Sales are still small in comparison to Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but the company's products have proven to have serious appeal. While the auto industry hemorrhaged sales in 2009, Subaru's volume and market share increased.

Mitsubishi Outlander GT
From the Outlander's aggressive snout, new for 2010, it's clear that Mitsubishi wants to sell the sportiest crossover on the market. The gaping trapezoid grille is virtually identical to that of the rally-bred Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and the Outlander makes a powerful impression when seen through a rear-view mirror.

Suzuki Grand Vitara Limited V6 4WD
While it's built using the unibody construction that typically categorizes a crossover, the Grand Vitara has a lot in common with a more traditional SUV. Its boxy shape and general proportions suggest a vehicle that's a downsized truck, rather than a hopped-up wagon. As its mechanicals indicate, it also has some off-road potential. There's a low range, a locking center differential, and hill-descent control.

Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited
If Mitsubishi is building the sporty crossover and Suzuki has the off-roader, that leaves Subaru to cover the straight and narrow mainstream. Driving the Outback quickly shows how close Subaru has come to replicating what you might expect in a Ford, Honda, or Toyota.

On the road
To test our trio of Japanese crossovers, we took to Michigan's rural back roads that offer a demanding mix of turns and broken pavement. The Outback was hampered by a set of Yokohama IceGuard ig20 winter tires, but that's just one factor in its sorry handling performance. When asked to dance, the Subaru's softly sprung suspension simply wants to sit out. The flipside of this setup is the plushest ride of the bunch.

Pick your poison
While we have our reservations about the Subaru Outback, it's the clear winner here. Yet we could justify each of these cars for a different buyer. The Grand Vitara's charm lies in its old-timey SUV feel with excellent outward visibility and a can-do attitude. However, that also means the Grand Vitara feels less civilized than either the Outlander or the Outback. Considered with the dated interior and modest driving behavior, it can only be recommended to those who insist they need its off-road ability.

Summary
SUZUKI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4-CYLINDER ENGINES; MODEL YEAR 2011 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES PRODUCED PRIOR TO OCTOBER 17, 2010; MODEL YEAR 2010 SUZUKI SX4 PASSENGER VEHICLES; AND 2011 SUZUKI SX4 PASSENGER VEHICLES PRODUCED PRIOR TO OCTOBER 14, 2010. THE TENSION ADJUSTER PULLEY FOR THE DRIVE BELT THAT OPERATES THE ALTERNATOR, WATER PUMP, AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR AND POWER STEERING PUMP, HAS AN IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED INTERNAL SPRING THAT CAN BREAK DUE TO REPEATED STRESS. IF THE SPRING BREAKS, THE DRIVE BELT WILL NOT BE ADJUSTED PROPERLY AND CAN SLIP, CAUSING A SQUEAKING NOISE. OR THE DRIVE BELT COULD COME OFF CAUSING THE DRIVER TO INCREASE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. THIS CAN ALSO CAUSE THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE INDICATION TO RISE, WHICH CAN LEAD TO THE ENGINE OVERHEATING, OR CAN CAUSE THE CHARGING LIGHT TO COME ON, WHICH CAN LEAD TO BATTERY DISCHARGE AND ENGINE STALL.
Consequences
IF THE DRIVE BELT COMES OFF, REQUIRING THE DRIVER TO USE INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, OR THE ENGINE STALLS, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR
Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TENSION ADJUSTER PULLEY WITH AN IMPROVED PART. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 16, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SUZUKI AT 1-887-697-8985 OR VISIT SUZUKI'S WEBSITE AT HTTP://WWW.SUZUKIAUTO.COM.

Component
AIR BAGS
Summary
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, over time, the OCS sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat. As a result, during a crash necessitating deployment, the air bag will deploy regardless of whether the front seat occupant is an adult or a child.
Consequences
Air bag deployment with a child in the front passenger side seat increases the risk of injury to that child.
Remedy
Suzuki will notify owners and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion assembly (which includes the OCS sensor mat) free of charge. Sufficient quantities of parts are not currently available to fix all of the affected vehicles. Owners will be notified of the recall in October 2013 and will receive a second notification when parts are available to have their vehicle repaired. The recall began on May 23, 2014. Owners may contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's recall campaign number is VD.
