Changes in the automotive world tend to happen at a snail's pace. It often takes years for manufacturers to recognize and correct the problems that cause would-be customers to walk out of the dealership empty-handed. Not so at Subaru, which pulled the handbrake on its new-for-2008 Impreza WRX, flicked the steering wheel, and executed the quickest one-eighty this side of a rally stage.
Last year's WRX was known in Japan as the S-GT. Subaru thought the market for an enthusiast WRX had evaporated, so it designed the S-GT to be a cushy grand tourer. Subaru of America must have convinced its parent company otherwise, because last year's WRX gets a few extra interior goodies, loses it manual transmission, and wallows its way out of North American dealerships with a "2.5GT" badge on it.

Meanwhile, the rally-inspired, come-beat-me-up WRX is back with a profoundly enhanced suspension, more aggressive exterior styling, and a whole lot more power. Like before, it's available in two body styles: a vaguely Korean-looking four-door sedan and a four-door hatchback. All '09 WRXs receive an STI-like grille and a slathering of spoilers, splitters, and sill extensions. The hatchback gets a rear diffuser, while the sedan boasts a new dual-exhaust treatment. Standard seventeen-inch wheels are now painted gray for a more sinister look, and the cabin gets a few STI touches, too, including metal pedal covers and red stitching on the sport seats and the leather steering wheel.
Turning that steering wheel while cornering at speed no longer results in Buick-style body motions, and the WRX's overall grip has been greatly improved thanks to 225-series summer performance rubber in place of last year's 205-mm-wide all-season tires. The extreme suspension makeover comes courtesy of springs that are more than 40 percent stiffer, revised dampers, and STI front upper strut mounts. The antiroll bars are significantly firmer, too-22 percent stiffer in the front and29 percent in the rear.

Last year, we complained so much about the suspension that we barely mentioned that there was also lots of room for improvement under the hood. Subaru didn't wait for us to bring it to their attention. For '09, the 2.5-liter flat four is force-fed via a larger turbo and produces 41 more hp, for a total of 265 hp. More important, the bigger blower dramatically changes the engine's personality, trading a little extra lag down low for huge gains at high revs. Last year's WRX ran out of breath above five grand, but the new engine pulls like the STI's, yanking the tach needle right into the red with virtually no drop in thrust. Helped by a curb weight that is some 220 pounds less than that of the STI (the WRX lacks the STI's fender flares, front and rear limited-slip diffs, sixth gear, Brembo brakes, eighteen-inch wheels, and driver-adjustable AWD systems), the WRX is only about half a second slower to 60 mph.
0811 04 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+rear Three Quarter View
The WRX isn't perfect-its five-speed manual transmission is vague and rubbery in its action, which is especially disappointing because the STI's six-speed is superbly precise. It still suffers from occasionally violent steering kickback over midcorner bumps, its brakes fade easily, and like other 2.5-liter turbocharged Subarus, the laggy engine surges noticeably under acceleration. The revised suspension gives the WRX a magic carpet ride, but insufficient rebound damping still lets the car float around when driven quickly.
Nevertheless, the '09 WRX is a vast improvement over the '08-and for about the same price. Few cars in this price range are as capable, quick, or fun. In fact, it seems the only thing faster than the new WRX is Subaru itself.

December auto sales provided some reason for hope going into 2010. The December total of 1,030,096 units sold was better than any other month in a grim 2009, save for August, which was fueled by the Cash-for-Clunkers program. December was also a considerable improvement over November - a 38% improvement, to be exact.

FORD MOTOR COMPANY -16%
For all the happy talk this year about Ford, America's favorite not-bankrupt auto company, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that Ford sold 16% fewer cars in 2009 than in its not-so-great 2008. Nonetheless, the company's financial solvency (not to be confused with financial health) allowed it to bask in the warm glow of approval from a public disgusted with other industrial giants hitting it up for cash. December 2009 looked particularly strong, with an increase over a miserable December 2008 of 33%, equal to white-hot Subaru but on much larger volumes. Even with its full-year sales decline, Ford was able to win market share for the first time in years, and new products due in 2010 may allow it to extend those gains.

GENERAL MOTORS -30%
GM's results are the most difficult to dissect of any car company this past year. Not only did GM earn public enmity by taking a government bailout, it went through a hugely publicized bankruptcy, slashed hundreds of its dealers in a massive bloodletting, and is closing down two of its major brands and attempting to sell two minor ones. For all that, what's surprising is that its 30% sales decline - although hideous - wasn't even worse. GM finished the year still the nation's biggest auto seller, some 300,000 units ahead of number-two Toyota. GM lost further ground in December 2009, with a 6% sales decline versus December 2008, but those totals include the run-out brands (and, the company claims, a one-third decline in fleet sales). Separate out only Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac, and you get a 2% increase in December, and a 26% full-year drop. Still not good, but a bit less bad.

The WRX is a car that happily does duty as both an everyday driver and a machine to whoop it up on the back roads. The hatchback body style is extremely useful--the seats flip and fold down easily and make for a flat load floor that can accommodate long or odd-sized objects. I prefer the short-throw shifter in the WRX SPT version we had in earlier, but I don't really object to the standard shifter in this car, which has a fairly smooth action and is nicely mated to the 265-hp turbo four. Of course, that engine is the raison-d'etre of the WRX. It makes for great fun when you're hammering the car down a stretch of two-lane.

Very often, the cars we receive from manufacturers are loaded up with equipment beyond what the average customer would order. It's enjoyable, no doubt, but sometimes I wonder if I'd have liked a car as much if it lacked some of the extras.

The first thing I noticed about this car was the transmission. It loses the short, notchy throws of the SPT's short shifter we sampled recently. The standard WRX has smoother shift action and a less finicky shifter.

This is the second Subaru WRX around the office in the past two months, and even though this one was less powerful, less showy, and less expensive, it was just as much fun to drive.

SPT, SPT, my kingdom for some SPT parts. Don't get me wrong, this WRX is still a powerful little hatch on its own, but I really miss some of those hop-ups we had on the first WRX Premium to grace our fleet.

The $295 for this WRX's STI short-throw five-speed manual seems like money well-spent. This was the first thing I noticed when I wheeled the Impreza WRX out of our parking structure: the lovely gearshifter action and clutch-pedal take-up. A great manual transmission really can make your day.
0907 05 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+front Three Quarters View
Wow, I haven't sampled a WRX since Subaru bumped up the engine's power last summer. The increase in horsepower and torque really makes this car more fun to drive, and the boom from the SPT exhaust system gives you an extra reason to run the engine up to redline. I didn't drive the car hard enough to really make any judgments on the effectiveness of the chassis upgrades, but I took one off ramp fast enough to experience a little lift-throttle oversteer. Childish, but fun.

As a wagon lover, the WRX hatchback is a dream car: big power, reasonable price, and practicality in a fun-to-drive package. Yes, you can get more power with the STI, but let's be honest: 265 hp is plenty in a compact wagon. Excellent handling and steering complete the sporty package. I'm rather fond of the WRX shape. It's a shame that Subaru has botched the styling with minor elements like the front fascia and those huge clear tail lamps.
0907 01 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+badge
I don't think people these days properly appreciate the sheer quantity of really fast and affordable cars presently on the market. Recession and fuel concerns notwithstanding, a guy or gal of reasonable means can choose from more than a dozen performance machines that will carve corners and do sub-six second 0-to-60-mph times without breaking a sweat. As a result of this veritable cornucopia of Ford Mustangs, Nissan 370Zs, and Dodge Chargers, some really good cars somehow become lost in the mix.
0907 06 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+front Three Quarters View
This WRX is all about the burbly, racy exhaust note! The sound is well worth the $800 that this SPT add-on costs. It's quite hard to overshadow the overall performance of the revised Impreza WRX, but that exhaust note is the easily strongest impression that I took away from my drive in this car.
0907 04 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+rear Three Quarters View
I have to say that I feel exactly the opposite of Rusty - the exhaust note doesn't do that much for me but I like the short-throw shifter. This is tempered by the fact that my time with the WRX was limited to around-town runs to the grocery store and the golf course, plus a couple of thirty-mile stints on the freeway. In that type of driving, a racy exhaust note wasn't exactly high on the desirability list.
0907 02 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+front Fascia
After loudly extolling the virtues of the Four Seasons Mitsubishi Evo, I found myself puzzled, as to whether I felt the same about this tarted-up version of the Impreza WRX. Sure, it has a horsepower bump over the WRX (275 v. 265), but it's a piddling increase compared to the STI's 30-hp advantage. I'm not really a fan of go-fast appearance packages, save for Audi's S-line, and it seems that's what the SPT designation brings to the WRX.
0907 07 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+front Three Quarters View
I join Tingwall as a wagon lover here, and like the styling and practicality of the WRX hatchback. The car has plenty of power to make it fun on the back roads and has handling and nicely weighted steering to match.
0907 07 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+front View
Factory performance parts just don't do anything for me. $800 for an exhaust, $370 for a lip spoiler, $230 for a front strut-tower brace, are you kidding me? As an aftermarket parts junkie myself, I can appreciate the great sound of a boxer engine with a free-flow exhaust as much as anybody. But you can almost duplicate the same sound and power people are raving about here by going to any muffler shop and having one of the middle mufflers taken out and replaced with a straight pipe for about $50.
0907 16 Z+2009 Subaru Impreza WRX+rear Three Quarters View
As fun as this WRX wagon may be, Mike's right - that $32,779 price tag hovers awfully close to an STI. How is this a bargain?

Summary
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines. Note that affected vehicles not currently, or formerly registered, in the salt belt states identified above are eligible for repair, at no cost to the customer, upon request.
Consequences
Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. Vehicles that were remedied under the previous campaign still need additional areas rust-proofed.
