New for 2014The 2014 Scion xB adds a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen display with iPod connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity and wireless music streaming, and HD radio. Two special editions, the 10 Series and Release Series 10.0, are also available in limited numbers.
Vehicle OverviewThe 2014 xB is a front-drive boxy hatchback sold in a single trim with a multitude of personalization options including performance, tech, and styling accessories for the exterior and interior.
SummaryThe 2014 Scion is powered by a 2.4-liter I-4 producing 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Its powertrain is a “torque monster down low, making the big anime trucklet feel a lot faster than it is.” However, the powertrain sacrifices fuel economy in favor of low-end torque with the EPA rating the 2014 xB at 22/28 mpg city/highway with either transmission. Handling is competent and helps make the 2014 xB a “pleasant windows-down cruiser at country road speeds.”
Interior quality is a 2014 xB weak point with “plain materials, cheap looking gauges and controls, and an uninspired design.” The cabin is cheap and its tech features are not up to par with the competition especially its poor stereo system. Space inside the 2014 xB is generous for passenger and cargo with up to 69.9 cubic feet of room with the rear seats folded down, making it an ideal utilitarian vehicle for families looking for a compact wagon.
The 2014 Scion tC 10 Series commemorates Scion’s 10-year anniversary and comes with illuminating exterior badging and gear shifter, electroluminescent dash, Silver Ignition exterior color, and “graphite finish” 16-inch alloy wheels. On the other hand, the 2014 xB Release Series 10.0 comes with a standard rearview camera, Electric Quartz exterior with green highlights, projected light stamps in the interior and rear bumper, illuminated door sills and cup holders, and green-accented seats.
The 2014 Scion xB has a four-star rollover safety score from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and earned a good score in four out of five categories in IIHS testing except in the small overlap front category where it earned a marginal rating.
What We ThinkThe 2014 xB is a good choice for those looking for a customizable utilitarian compact car with quirky styling. Its generous and versatile interior space makes it ideal for hauling cargo and for families. Customizability is another 2014 xB highlight with its host of accessories, which include parts such as a TRD muffler, 19-inch wheels, interior lighting, and a roof spoiler. However, in an Editor’s Notebook review of a 2013 model, we said that the car’s interior “fails miserably” with gauges that looked plain and uninspired, and an “all-black color scheme that felt oppressive even after a short time behind the wheel.”
