2014 Scion tC
2014 Scion tC

New for 2014

The 2014 Scion tC receives a mid-cycle refresh with the addition of new headlights, LED daytime running lights and tail lights, a new grille, new 18-inch wheels, and a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, and steering wheel-mounted controls. It also receives an updated chassis and body rigidity to improve handling, retuned electric power steering, and a six-speed automatic transmission tuned for faster shifts and Dynamic Rev Matching technology borrowed from the rear-drive FR-S.

Vehicle Overview

The 2014 tC is a front-drive coupe sold in a single grade and is available with a host of personalization options. Scion released the Monogram Series and 10 Series special edition models for the 2014 model year each with their own unique equipment. The 2014 Scion tC 10 Series commemorates Scion’s 10-year anniversary and comes with illuminating exterior badging and gear shifter, electroluminescent dash, Silver Ignition exterior color, and “dark finish” 18-inch wheels. On the other hand, the 2014 Monogram Series tC is a “premium” version of the coupe with leather upholstery, BeSpoke audio with navigation, push-button start, rear spoiler, rear window wiper, heated front seats, and a leather-trimmed gear shift lever.

Summary

The 2014 tC continues to offer great value to buyers looking for a sporty coupe with generous room for passengers and cargo. It is powered by a 2.5-liter I-4 producing 179 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque paired to a six-speed manual or automatic. Fuel economy is not impressive at 23/31 mpg city/highway with either transmission, which is slightly behind its competition. Driving dynamics are mediocre at best with no hint of torque steer, an electric power steering system that “feels commendably natural” and “competent but not really eager” chassis.
Where the 2014 tC falters is in interior quality and refinement because of the low quality materials used in the cabin and dated infotainment system. The stereo system, in particular, is a let-down because it isn’t up to par with other units due to sound “that ranges from muffled to boomy.” On the other hand, room for people and/or cargo in the 2014 tC is generous with its large hatch, and spacious rear seats that can accommodate adults.
Customizability remains a 2014 tC strong suit with a host of available exterior, interior, and performance accessories such as TRD lowering springs, performance exhaust, a rear spoiler, 19-inch wheels, interior lighting, and remote start.
The 2014 Scion tC has a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and is considered a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, earning a good score in four out of five categories except the small overlap category where it got an acceptable rating.

What We Think

The 2014 tC remains a mediocre offering from Scion even after its mid-life refresh due to its lack of refinement and average driving dynamics. Its low-quality interior, lackluster fuel economy, and dated infotainment system make it a less compelling choice for sporty coupe buyers due to the competitors with more intuitive units, more powerful engines, and better gas mileage. Additionally, in an Editor’s Notebook review of a 2011 tC we observed that the car has a loud interior due to an unrefined powertrain and prominent road noise. Despite the strong I-4 making good power throughout the rev range, we noted in a First Drive review that “it isn’t a particularly thrilling engine.”
