2011 Lexus GS450h

Matt Tierney

The Lexus GS450h is the very definition of civilized motoring. It's vault quiet on the highway, it glides along on even the roughest roads suppressing all manner of heaves, cracks, and potholes, and it imperceptibly transitions between its engine and electric motor. No surprise here, this is what Lexus does best. What is surprising, though, is the cabin of this $60,000 luxury car. It's comfortable and the controls are easy to find and reach -- although it took me several minutes to remember that the rearview mirror controls are hidden away in the drawer by the driver's left knee -- but material quality is spotty at best and the overall character is indistinctive and looks dated. The infotainment interface also is in dire need of an update. And the cheesy, faux-marble pattern that comprises the background of the infotainment display is really terrible.

With vehicles like the gorgeous, modern, and much more economical Infiniti M35h vying for the same buyers, the redesigned GS450h can't come soon enough.
