2009 Honda S2000 CR

I'm sure going to miss the S2000 when it goes away after the '09 model year. I'm not a huge fan of this racy CR edition, what with its garish wing, hard top, and wild fairings behind the headrests; I'd honestly prefer to own the $2000-cheaper base S2000 and have the benefits of a stealthier appearance and an easier-to-lower roof. Depriving a CR of regular track exercise would be a crime, but if I had the money for both an S2000 and regular track time, I might change my S2000 preference.

The best part about every S2000 is the six-speed-manual gearbox. The short, firm throws and slick, stout action make it the best stick shift on the market today. No other car compels me to make unnecessary, just-for-the-fun-of-it shifts like the S2000. The engine's great VTEC performance high in the rev range is enthralling, but it doesn't seem quite as binary as I remember it in other S2000s. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic car to bang through the gears in. But then you turn the wheel and experience the S2000's impeccable balance and lovely steering feel, and all of a sudden it's 10 pm, you haven't eaten dinner yet, and you're a hundred miles from home. I completely understand how Evan was late for that afterhours barbecue ...

I've loved my S2000 which is now 9 years old. Ihas been my only car in that time and has alway been a pleasure to drive. Snow tires are a must in winter here in STL. The outstanding features from my perspective are the engine, the great feeling transmission, the super quick powered top, and the excellnt overall design. Steering was good but not as communicative as my Gen 3 RX-7 (however that car could get really scary on bad roads!). The other area where I was a little dissapointed was suspension damping, it was under damped. On one of the roads I would regularly drive the road would exite the system where it felt floaty. Still a great overall car which I plan to keep for years to come. Now it shares time with a Cayman S and still holds its own in some areas (convertible, engine shriek, gearbox feel). 2 Pretty nice rides.

I'm an old six foot something guy and no featherweight. I grew up driving MG's, Bug Eyes, and a cranky 914-6. Today I drive an 08 s2k and love every mile of it. Just made an 820 mile round trip run to Key West and back for the hell of it and the car exceeded my expectations. Along the way I encountered another old guy at a gas stop in a pristine 69 MGB... we chatted, admired our respective rides, and motored on. (He had his top down too unlike the gaggle of z3's and Miata's I saw along the way. He was a real car guy. Funny, I've always quietly thought of the s2k as this decade's MG except it turns, stops, and really scoots, all without all those pesky electrical problems. Honda got it right... I hope they see fit to cobble together a worthy successor for without the pure driving experience of the S2000 we car guys have lost a major player in the the world of cars you have at least got to drive once.
