2014 BMW 640i xDrive Gran Coupe - Around the Block

For customers shopping in the high-end luxury sedan segment, decisions are guided more by aesthetics than rationality. The 2014 BMW 640i xDrive Gran Coupe has the looks and presence to dazzle just about any practical nay-sayer. When you encounter the BMW 640i Gran Coupe in person—and realize how much you want to be seen with it in public—the concerns about whether this car makes sense fade into the background.

Sure, it’s definitely pricey at $90,000 as tested. Many question whether a stretched-out, four-door version of a two-door version of the BMW 5-series even needs to exist at all. But given that 640i Gran Coupe buyers are looking to make primarily a style statement, it’s money well spent. Our test car came with the $4400 M Sport package. The stunning 19-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, striking body kit, and black exterior trim details are a key part of this BMW’s raison d'etre of turning heads and dropping jaws.

The 2014 BMW 640i xDrive Gran Coupe extends that mission to its lavish interior. A massive panoramic sunroof helps make the cabin feel bright and airy, further enhancing the experience of the luxurious, rich-colored interior. Every single surface—whether wood-paneled, leather-wrapped, or chrome-trimmed—is expertly assembled and soft to the touch. Compared to that of the Maserati Ghibli S Q4 we recently tested, the fit and finish on the BMW is light years ahead.

Debonair it may be, but the BMW 640i Gran Coupe's driving experience is disproportionately unremarkable. “A car that looks this dramatic should drive the same way,” notes associate web editor Jake Holmes. “Its 315-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 is powerful enough, but the 640i Gran Coupe lacks any real urgency or excitement.”

Staffers agree that the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7 feel more solid and agile while offering similarly decked-out interiors, and the A7 even features a handy rear hatchback. Still, for the style-conscious BMW shopper who wants the distinctiveness of a 6-Series but favors the utility of four doors, the 2014 BMW 640i xDrive Gran Coupe makes a strange sort of sense.

This vehicle has a conventional 8 spd. auto, not dual clutch. ZF makes it the same supplier Audi, Bentley, and a number of others use.

I'd just like to mention that the car does not have an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. It's a traditional torque convertor automatic.

I don't understand BMW's new naming system.... Why go through all the trouble of this "odd #'s are sedans, even #'s are coupe's" only to then make a 4 door 6 series?  Why not just make this the 5 series and be done with it, yes it's gorgeous and yes it's not a not as practical but then can always name it the 5 series grande coupe instead and make some sense...

Yes...it's drop dead gorgeous.  Yes it's well made.  Yes it's interior is top shelf.   Put next to a CLS or an A7 and the Bimmer definitely tops the chart in the looks department. 
But to complain about the powertrain lacking oomph isn't a just statement.  If you need power to match the looks, check the option box for the 445 hp 4.4 liter V8 which starts at $89,200. 
PS. Stop calling it a coupe.  It's a 6-series sedan.
