The Opel Insignia appears to be the workhorse platform for GM's future cars these days. While no doubt a good product, I wonder if we're capable of designing something better domestically?

Also, why didn't GM keep Pontiac instead of Buick? Seems to me that Buick is too similar to Cadillac. The line up would have been more diverse using Pontiac as their performance division.

It's a funny idea that an American platform would be preferable to a european one. Why waste the money? Or the time? Opel has been designing great platforms for generations now. Small to medium size cars are their specialty. Competition is fierce in the euro market, and standards have been set high. While GM North America was busy with pickups and SUVs(so it seems to us outsiders). GM is a worldwide company. It seems more pertinent to make the most of what it's already got. Then there's a chance it could bring some quality product to market, and earn some sales.
