Especially since the Mini's steering ratio is lightning quick. As with almost all electric systems, steering feel is a little artificial, but the rack is commendably precise. An upgraded (and quite stiff) suspension keeps the Works' body control well in check, and a precise shifter makes spirited driving a piece of cake. Surprisingly, front-end traction seems never to be a problem in a straight line - our particular test car was able to put down all of its might in first gear, and no matter how quickly we shifted into second, it wouldn't so much as chirp the front wheels on clutch engagement.

The John Cooper Works standard seventeen-inch wheels are not only gorgeous but also ultra light, and the sport suspension is specially calibrated for the Works models. The six-speed manual transmission has been reinforced to cope with the additional power, and the Works Minis come with piano black interior trim and an anthracite headliner standard. Mini offers some additional dealer accessories, such as a body kit, a strut-tower brace, and an even more aggressive suspension that sits 10mm (about half an inch) lower.

At around $30,000, these Works Minis certainly aren't cheap, and their firm ride probably won't appeal to everyone. But that's not the point. They are adorable, well-built little cars with go-kart handling and superb fuel economy - and there's definitely a market for that.
