What a fantastic powertrain. This V-8 seemingly revs to the sky and sounds fantastic during full-throttle upshifts. Perhaps the biggest complaint there is that by the time you hear the second shift, you're in serious trouble. The RS5 is an absolute rocket. But it's a manageable rocket. Unlike some new vehicles that use turbocharged engines, the RS5 makes due with 4.2 liters of normally aspirated, high-revving goodness that can still leave a stop with grace.
There are better sports cars, but they give up a lot of day-to-day utility to the RS5. This is a coupe or convertible that can tackle any weather conditions and still offers a reasonable amount of cargo space and room for passengers. Not to mention the RS5 was the fastest car around Grattan Raceway during our $64,000 Question cover story from the December 2012 issue. It may not check every intangible feedback box, but the RS5 is a very logical, very desirable car in its own right. I can't fault anyone for choosing an M3 over an RS5 because they prefer the BMW's tactility, but I think the Audi is a much more logical choice unless you live adjacent to a fantastic canyon road.

This is the dream four-seat new convertible for me. That sound. Those quick shifts. Those wheels. That thick steering wheel. I want.
The very good steering has great feel in country-road corners and isn't twitchy when cruising. The way the RS5 sticks to the road makes me want to drive it on a racetrack, even though I know the cabrio is the poseur of the RS5 coupe/convertible lineup. I love it anyway. It's a very stylish, very powerful, very classy, super comfortable ride.
