Even though we recently drove the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, our affection for our V-6-powered Four Seasons Grand Cherokee still stays strong. Although the memory of storming along the back roads of Jackson County, Michigan, in the 470-hp SRT8 was fresh in his mind, copy editor Rusty Blackwell "marveled at how responsive and strong our V-6 Grand Cherokee is."
Blackwell is not the only one who recognizes how robustly engineered the Jeep is. "If the Grand Cherokee platform is good enough for Maserati to use it as the basis for its first-ever crossover SUV, it must be a pretty good vehicle," says deputy editor Joe DeMatio. "What we have here is a components set engineered largely by Mercedes engineers in Stuttgart, Germany, then de-contented (but not dumbed down) for Jeep duty."
All that praise aside, our Grand Cherokee's age and mileage are beginning to show -- there have been complaints of a rattle somewhere in the front of the cabin. Some have reported it to be coming from the dash, others from the passenger seat. Blackwell was able to quell the noise by pushing on the seat, but we'll make sure to have it checked out if the rattle continues.
We've put the Jeep's cargo area to use over the past month. Managing editor for digital platforms Jen Misaros used the Grand Cherokee for a Costco run and made full use of the way-back space. However, she wished for a set of running boards for loading stuff through the side doros and a lower lift height for loading stuff through the hatchback. In response, other editors have told Misaros to wear higher heels, as she's one of the shortest staffers in the office. But Misaros is not a high-heel-wearing lady and she stands by her comments.
Senior web editor Phil Floraday also used the Grand Cherokee for a long weekend of camping. "After a weekend of camping with the Grand Cherokee, it didn't leave me wanting much. There was more than enough room for five adults in the vehicle on a short ride, though we had to offload a bunch of my gear to a friend's pickup truck bed in order to fit all of us, our camp chairs, and a cooler in the cargo area."
