Seasons may change, but our Four Seasons Suzuki Kizashi doesn't. The all-wheel-drive sedan remains popular for long road trips, where it continues to win friends and change notions about the Japanese automaker.
The latest Kizashi convert was colleague Al Luckwald, who took the car down to Williamsburg, Virginia for a family vacation. Although the premise of a Suzuki with a $27,000-price tag seemed a little odd at first, Luckwald quickly came to appreciate the Kizashi.
"I could not have asked for a better car than the Kizashi for our trip," he writes. "The amenities-including the leather seating, excellent A/C, and USB input-were all we could ask for, and the four-cylinder never struggled in the hills of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. I am delightfully shocked with how well it drives and how nicely it is styled inside and out-I would certainly recommend it to friends that are in the market for a midsize sedan."
Art director Matt Tierney followed Luckwald's trip with a journey of his own, to North Carolina to retrieve some leftovers from his recent move. Tierney's calculations show the Kizashi, while not exactly a gas hog, is a little more petrol-hungry than its competition. Highway stretches usually average around 27 mpg, while the number falls just below 24 mpg during city driving.
"Mileage aside," he writes, "it's still a great little car. It got surprising amounts of attention on my trip, with four different people asking me about it in Asheville, including one cyclist who backtracked from a steep climb up the Blue Ridge parkway to ask very direct questions about the car."
Thankfully, our Suzuki dealer hasn't had to pay that much attention to our Kizashi. We recently took it in for a routine service, and paid roughly $40 for an oil change, filter, multi-point inspection, and a battery test. We're happy to report the Kizashi is more than holding it's own in its first 20,000 miles. Here's hoping its next six months go just as well.
