We're now five months in to our one-year test and staffers are hard pressed to find any serious weaknesses with the Q5. Senior editor Joe Lorio writes, "The Q5 is easy to get into and out of, agreeably sized, adequately spacious, and reasonably priced; it's easy to see why the Q5 far outsells the comparatively porky and pricey Q7."
Audi's impressive drive train, captained by the 3.2-liter V-6 engine, might be the car's most often discussed feature. Assistant editor David Zenlea opines, "It's absurdly quick. It usually measures about 6.5 seconds in 0-to-60 tests, which is very good, but that actually doesn't quite reveal to how responsive it is in the real world. At any speed, in any gear, full throttle or part throttle, the 3.2-liter V-6 provides an instant burst of acceleration, and never seems to run out of breath." With such performance, we wonder if Audi would ever put a smaller, more economical engine under the hood, like their 2.0-liter turbo or TDI.
Matt Tierney, our new art director, recently took the Q5 home for a night and returned the keys reasonably pleased, "I think the center console and controls are a blend of genius and over-engineering, but it annoys me that just about every knob seems to do quadruple duty." Zenlea agrees and gripes, "Even after several days straight in the vehicle, I find myself reaching for the volume knob right next to the DVD slot - a knob that doesn't exist. I, like just about every other driver in the world, have spent my entire life adjusting the volume via a knob on the radio. If that's not logical, too bad."
With the snow finally melted, it's time to remove our Q5's winter tires in favor of Michelin all-seasons, and a 15,000-mile maintenance checkup will be performed shortly. Then our Q5 will be ready to sail into spring-or, as it's known around here, road-construction season.
