The history books would have you believe that the West was once a wild place. But if you're braving the sweltering California desert and happen upon a little town called Palm Springs, you'd never know it. The dusty bandits, merciless bounty hunters, and untamed renegades are long gone, replaced by air-conditioned cafés, opulent galleries, and swanky day spas. The only weapons in use are those rumbling under the hoods of the many exotic and classic cars cruising the boulevard. The desert people clearly favor Cadillacs over Caterhams, though - luxury rules the West now.

The BMW 760Li, the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, and the Porsche Panamera Turbo each enter the saloon with at least 500 horses of firepower tucked away beneath a façade of formality. They look benign enough, but when the dust starts flying, there are few steeds that can match their speed. They may all hail from Germany, but there's something distinctly Wild West about these three sedans. And so we took them to Palm Springs, their natural habitat, for a gunslinging showdown.

The Panamera is likely the greatest departure from the standard Porsche formula to day. After a surprising success with the Cayenne, Porsche decided to get even more ambitious with what could be a Porsche. Now we have the Panamera, a four door hatchback sedan. It has already proved itself a huge success regardless of the fact that many in the automotive industry berated the Wizards of Stuttgart when it was announced. They knew what they were doing, it would seem, as the draw of a Porsche sports machine that could seat four in comfort has made it the fastest selling model at Porsche dealers. Its styling alone remains a possible deal breaker for some. While it offers all the performance one would expect from a Porsche, the exterior lacks some of the seductive lines that are commonly attributed to Porsche's.

Performance is something that the Panamera does have, and has plenty of it. The front mounted engine is a 4.8 liter V-8 available either in naturally aspirated or twin turbocharged formats. The turbo is good for 500 HP. These engines are both mated to Porsches now famous 7 speed PDK transmission. Power can be sent to the ground via either rear wheel or all wheel drive.
2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S
Porsche will use this year's New York auto show to unveil the 2012 Panamera Turbo S, the most powerful factory version yet of the company’s luxury sedan. Building on the 500-horsepower Panamera Turbo, the new car trumps its non-S stablemate with an infusion of 50 more horsepower and 37 extra pound-feet of torque.
2011 Bmw 1 Series M Coupe Safety Car Front Three Quarter
Both BMW and Porsche are adding new vehicles to their race safety fleets. BMW will be taking its 1 Series M Coupe to patrol the motorcycle world races of MotoGP, and Porsche’s Panamera Turbo will join its Cayenne on safety duty for the American Le Mans Series races.
2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid Front Passenger Three Quarter
The 2011 Geneva Motor Show is shaping up to have quite a selection of showstoppers from both ends of the power spectrum. On one end, Rinspeed will be showing its electric Bamboo concept, and at the other, Lamborghini will debut its 691-horsepower 2012 Aventador flagship. Meeting in the middle of these two worlds are Porsche’s 2012 Panamera S Hybrid and Land Rover’s Range_e plug-in hybrid-electric SUV.

Is bigger always better? Perhaps so -- at least when it comes to large luxury sedans. To appease customers seeking additional legroom and space for rear-seat passengers, Porsche may create a stretched version of its successful Panamera sedan.
Porsche Hybrid Emblem
The 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid was the first hybrid model from Porsche, but it appears that there will be another green model coming soon from Stuttgart. Porsche has announced plans to unveil a new parallel hybrid model at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
