New For 2013

The Versa sedan was all-new for 2012 and receives only modest changes this year. There’s a new 1.6 S model with a four-speed automatic transmission, which is cheaper than models with a CVT. Models with the CVT will now return 40 mpg on the highway, thanks to new aerodynamic parts and some powertrain tuning. The Versa hatchback is unchanged but is due for a redesign at the end of 2012.

The Versa sedan and Versa Note hatchback are the cheapest new Nissans you can buy, offering incredible value for the money. The base models have attractive prices, but they lack such features as power locks and windows, cruise control, and keyless entry. Many buyers will instead gravitate to the pricier and better-equipped SV and SL trim levels, on which navigation, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and keyless entry are available. The switchgear and gauges are clear and easy to use, but basic, and many of the interior fittings and plastics look and feel cheap. However, the Versa will satisfy people looking for basic, affordable transportation because it is comfortable and easy to drive. An efficient 1.6-liter engine can return as much as 40 mpg, but its meager 109 hp requires patience when merging on highways. A smooth continuously variable transmission is standard on all but the cheapest trim levels; the S offers a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. In spite of its compact exterior dimensions, the Versa sedan has a spacious cabin, a roomy back seat, and a surprisingly large trunk. The Note, which goes on sale in June as a 2014 model, offers even more interior room and is extremely practical thanks to its roomy rear hatch. Whether opting for the bargain-basement Versa S or a better-equipped sedan or hatchback, buyers will find themselves behind the wheel of an agreeable and inexpensive small car.

Front, side, and side curtain air bags are standard, as are stability and traction control, ABS with brake assist, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

2012 Nissan Versa SV Sedan Front Three Quarter
In the midsize and compact segments, the sales charts are predictably dominated by Honda and Toyota, with some of the domestic brands showing a surprising resurgence in those segments. But in the B-segment (or subcompact, to us Yanks), it's a whole different pecking order.
Nissan Resonance Concept With Versa Note
Nissan’s big debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show was either its revolutionary new technology that pipes in a scent known as “Thé Vert Oriental,”  which is supposed to smell like green tea during the harvest or the Resonance concept vehicle.
