Is the Prius on track to outsell the Camry? Jim Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., thinks it’s likely that the Prius nameplate may indeed become “more dominant” than the vaulted Camry by the end of the decade.
Lentz doesn’t think the Prius will steal Camry sales, but gain strength in its own right, especially as eco-awareness and higher fuel prices continue to sway consumer decisions.
“I think Prius will become just that much stronger,” Lentz told Ward’s Auto World.
The Camry has been the top-selling passenger car in the U.S. for 11 of the past 12 years. Through October, the Camry has sold 294,493 units, while Prius sales for the same period have totaled 118,290. Sales records for the two were reached in 2007, with 473,108 Camrys sold, and 181,221 Prius models reaching customers.
Prius sales may also be bolstered by an extra model (i.e. a crossover), but Toyota hasn’t confirmed anything thus far. Lentz, however, says a second Prius model is “still his dream,” and is a subject he frequently raises at corporate meetings in Japan. However, corporate officials worry that an additional Prius would damage sales of other hybrid (perhaps the Highlander).
