Will Smart Revive Coupe, ForFour Models?

Although Americans are only familiar with the ForTwo, prior to Smart’s U.S. debut, it dabbled with sports coupe and four-door models. According to some sources, it’s set to do the same.

Automotive News suggests a new Smart sedan—possibly reviving the “ForFour” moniker—is under development. Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche has expressed his interest in reviving a four-door Smart model, if the conditions were right.
“It certainly would not hurt,” Zetsche said during a recent financial conference call, “if we could do things different than others.”
Undoubtedly, the new ForFour would be quite different than its predecessor. Unlike the first iteration, which shared its underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Colt, the new four-door may source its mechanical bits from Renault’s compact Twingo. Zetsche has hinted that if a new ForFour were to succeed, it would need to be positioned as a premium compact car, like the MINI Cooper.
Perhaps more interesting are a series of patent drawings unearthed by Autocar. Filed by Daimler, the renderings show a compact coupe, but configured as a three-seat model. Although the driver’s centered position is similar to that of the McLaren F1, the possibility of a compact, economical three-seat sports car reminds us of the oft-forgotten Matra Talbot Murena and Bagheera.
Details on both cars are still sketchy at this point, but it’s suggested the For-Four may be revealed as early as 2013, and the ForThree could launch in 2014. In either case, it’s likely that we’ll see at least one of the two new models in the United States.
