Watch This Next-Gen BMW M5 Prototype Take on the Nurburgring
Rumors of AWD and 600+ hp.
Never content to let the Cadillac CTS-V and Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat hog the super-sedan spotlight for too long, the BMW M5 is preparing to strike back. In this latest spy footage, the legendary BMW M5 hurtles around the Nurburgring in prototype form.
Much V-8 exhaust growl and tire squealing ensues. That's the kind of thing we like to see. The spy video shows the BMW M5 handling capably at some seriously high speeds, as well.
The rumor mill surrounding the BMW M5 has been active. There has been a lot of talk suggesting the next M5 will go all-wheel drive, although BMW M CEO Franciscus van Meel told AUTOMOBILE that it would have a significant rear bias and "drive like an M Should drive. " Aerodynamic improvements and weight reduction are likely also a part of that story, and that means we can look forward to increased use of aluminum, carbon fiber, and carbon-reinforced plastics.
As far as the engine, we expect the BMW M5 to continue with its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. The standard M5 on sale since 2012 makes 560 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque, but the next model is expected to at least match the output of the 600-hp limited-run M5 30th Anniversary package.
There's no timeline for the moment on the next BMW M5, but we don't expect to see if before 2017.
