Volkswagen continues to offer smaller and more powerful engines with the new 1.2-liter TSI and 1.6-liter TDI Engines. VW plans to implement the two new powertrain options in the new Golf and Polo.
The 1.2-liter turbocharged and direct injected inline-four engine is the latest addition to the TSI engine family. Despite its small size, the 1.2-liter power plant churns out a respectable 104-hp and delivers 129 lb-ft of torque at just 1500 rpm.
VW achieved such efficiency with the engine by reducing friction and weight. The engine features an aluminum crank case and an advanced combustion process. The company already has reaped the benefits of these advancements in the 1.4-liter TSI engine, which won the “Engine of the Year” award for three years in a row.
Taking the role of the new entry-level engine for the Polo and Golf will be the 1.6-liter TDI diesel engine. It will be available in various levels of power, starting with a 74-hp variant for the Polo. VW also will offer the 1.6-liter engine in higher-powered 89-hp and 104-hp versions. Due to its modular structure, it will serve as the basis for all of VW’s future four-cylinder diesel engines.
The engines were presented at the 30th Vienna Engine Symposium last week. Both engines will be available on the new Golf and Polo in Europe later this year. As usual, VW has yet to announce whether the engines will be certified for U.S. consumption.
