Volkswagen Scirocco Facelifted for 2014 Geneva Auto Show

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the debut of the Volkswagen Scirocco, as this sporty, stylish sport compact was first revealed at the 1974 Geneva auto show. To celebrate, Volkswagen has revealed a facelifted Scirocco that will debut at the 2014 Geneva auto show next month. Sadly, this hot hatch forbidden fruit will continue to be forbidden, as there are still no plans to bring the Volkswagen Scirocco to the U.S.

The Volkswagen Scirocco has only gone through three generations since 1974, with the first model run from 1974-1981 and the second-generation from 1981-1992. This third-generation Scirocco brought the nameplate back in 2008 and is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf. For the facelift, the swoopy Scirocco receives new front and rear styling along with upgrades to the powertrains and the interior.

Up front, the fascia is revised with slightly different headlamps and a more aggressive-looking lower grille section. The rear taillights are also revised with a slightly different shape and standard LED lighting, and the rear tailgate is shaped slightly differently. Interior upgrades like the new three-binnacle central instrument cluster pay tribute to the original Volkswagen Scirocco, and Volkswagen is also offering new equipment like a Dynaudio sound system and a park assist feature.

In Europe, the Volkswagen Scirocco is offered with a range of gasoline and diesel engines. The gasoline powerplants range from a 1.4-liter TSI four-cylinder, all the way up to the Volkswagen Scirocco R which is powered by a 276-hp version of the Volkswagen 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. There are also two 2.0-liter TDI diesel models available.
