Volkswagen is determined to show the automotive world that its engineers are serious about the efficient XL1 concept: The car is actually headed for production.
The goal with the XL1 was to build a vehicle that consumes less than a single liter of fuel for every 100 kilometers driven, or about 261 mpg. By using plenty of carbon fiber and a plug-in diesel-electric powertrain, the Volkswagen is ultra-efficient. The diesel engine is a 0.8-liter two-cylinder unit.
Volkswagen Chairman Ferdinand Piech told Automotive News that the XL1 may go into series production starting in 2013. Germany will be first to get the car, followed by China and the U.S. Up to 100 cars will be built, but don’t confuse this initial run of cars with full-scale production, which is a decision likely to be made much later.
The first 100 XL1s will give Volkswagen an opportunity to see how the boldly styled car performs in real-world situations. Volkswagen isn’t talking about the XL1’s price just yet. While the car will undoubtedly be expensive for the automaker to make, costs have come down on carbon-fiber since the first XL1 concept debuted, and the price of the lithium-ion battery is expected to decrease by 2013, as well.
