Every year at the Wörthersee festival in Austria, Volkswagen shows some sort of wild concept based on the Volkswagen GTI hot hatch. This year’s concept, the Volkswagen GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo concept, builds off of last year’s Vision Gran Turismo car and takes it into the virtual world thanks to a new tie-in with the Gran Turismo racing game.
From Volkswagen’s preliminary sketches of this one-off design study, the Roadster Vision Gran Turismo looks similar to last year’s Design Vision GTI with its aggressive wide body kit. The biggest difference, though, is that the Roadster Vision doesn’t have a roof, as you might expect from its name. Instead, the Roadster Vision Gran Turismo adopts a speedster-like profile with a sleek, low-slung wraparound glass that slopes downward toward the rear.
It may be barely recognizable as a Volkswagen GTI, but the Roadster Vision Gran Turismo should look pretty wild with its oversized wheels, sweeping roll-bar over the rear cockpit, and gigantic rear spoiler. This exaggerated concept car will be playable in Gran Turismo 6 for Sony Playstation 3, which will give players a chance to wring out the Roadster Vision Gran Turismo’s beefed-up performance credentials.
These credentials include 503 hp from a 3.0-liter twin-turbo VR6; enhanced grip from 4Motion all-wheel drive and super-wide tires front and rear; and increased downforce from a special front splitter, rear diffuser, and the aforementioned rear wing.
Stay tuned for more official photos of the Volkswagen GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo concept as it debuts in Austria this weekend.
