Volkswagen Builds Wild Amarok R Pickup Concept

We’re sure Volkswagen Amarok owners wouldn’t argue with more torque, and that’s exactly what the automaker has given its latest Worthersee festival concept. Along with a GTI making about 500 hp, the sporty Amarok concept debuts at Worthersee, and is powered by a six-cylinder turbodiesel engine.

You’ll make quite an impression driving the Amarok concept to the track, with its extended wheel well arches and gunmetal-colored 22-inch wheels with 295/35 tires. While regular Amaroks are powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4, the Worthersee Amarok gets a 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 with about 270 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. For comparison, the U.S.-spec Volkswagen Touareg TDI manages 406 lb-ft from its 3.0-liter turbodiesel.

The sport truck makes the most of that engine with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive; acceleration from 0-62 mph is said to take 7.9 seconds. Visually, the Worthersee Amarok is distinguished by its red and black accents on the side of the truck, with what appears to be a carbon fiber accent on the lower front fascia, as well as red brake calipers. HID headlights are included, as are darkened LED taillights and dual exhaust outlets integrated into the bumper. Inside, the red and black accents continue, and aside from the eight-inch touch screen, Volkswagen has added a stopwatch and gauges to measure torque and boost pressure.

We doubt the U.S. market will ever see the Amarok since Volkswagen’s focus appears to be challenging Toyota with high-volume vehicles such as the Jetta and Passat. Still, that doesn’t make us want Volkswagen’s Worthersee-bound Amarok concept any less…
