Volkswagen Beetle R Spied Testing

We spot a new hot version of the Beetle testing in Germany.

Volkswagen will be adding another model to its R lineup with the upcoming Volkswagen Beetle R that was previewed with the Beetle R concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Our photographer recently spied a Volkswagen Beetle R prototype testing in Germany, and the high-performance Bug looks to display much of the same hardware as its Golf R and Scirocco R cousins.

The Volkswagen Beetle R will most likely be powered by the same modified 2.0-liter turbo that Volkswagen just announced will produce 296 hp in the newest 2015 Golf R. This powertrain, along with the Golf R’s standard all-wheel-drive and six-speed manual or DSG transmissions, should carry over to the Beetle R, as it is based on the same basic platform as the Golf.

The photos also display an aggressive body kit and larger wheels that hint at the Beetle R’s increased performance capability. There are also bright-red brake calipers under the five-spoke wheels and a dual exhaust system out back, which our photographer reported as making an especially sporty rumble. There’s no word on whether the matte grey paint job will make it to production, but it’s an interesting effect in combination with the Beetle’s rounded lines.

When it arrives sometime in 2014, the Volkswagen Beetle R will sit atop the revised Beetle lineup, which now includes the 2.5L models with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder, R-Line models with a 210 hp version of the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, a sporty GSR with special decals and fascias and the 2.0T engine, and the efficient TDI diesel model. Volkswagen’s new 1.8-liter turbocharged engine will come to the Beetle sometime next year to replace the 2.5L as the base model.

Look for the Volkswagen Beetle R to debut sometime next year, with the car hitting showrooms by the end of 2014.
