Volkswagen Becomes Third Largest Automaker

What’s in a number?; We’re not sure, but Volkswagen’s proud of the fact that it’s now the third largest car manufacturer in the world.

Those figures come courtesy of sales figures for the first half of 2008.; Volkswagen managed to sell 3.31 million vehicles over the last six months.; Ford, which previously held the #3 spot, mustered only 3.22 million cars.

Although this marks the first occasion where Volkswagen’s entered the top three ranks, VW Chairman Dr. Martin Winterkorn plans to “systematically push ahead with our growth course even in the present market environment.”; We’ll see if an all-new factory in the U.S. – coupled with a new car exclusively designed for North America – will bolster the automaker’s figures in the next few years.
