Ever since its introduction, the R35 Nissan GT-R has kept its supercar competitors up at night. Since it originally debuted, Godzilla has evolved with power upgrades, suspension and chassis revisions, and now a new Track Edition model. That car is put to the test on this episode of Ignition to find out whether the GT-R is still a giant-slayer.
We begin with an overview of the Track Edition’s upgrades. The car gets new brake cooling ducts in the front valance, the forged Rays alloy wheels and Dunlop SP Sport Maxx summer tires of the Black Edition, retuned Bilstein shocks, and stiffer springs. Other than that, the Track Edition doesn’t get much, and host Carlos Lago argues that the GT-R doesn’t need that much to stay competitive.
The new model puts down a 2.7-second 0-60 mph time, and a quarter-mile of 11.0 seconds flat. The Track Edition also performs well in 60-0 mph braking and figure-eight tests, but since Lago wants to see if the car lives up to its name, he heads for Willow Springs raceway. Once there, Lago remarks that the GT-R’s natural all-wheel-drive grip and low-end torque make it exceptionally good at exiting corners. After a few laps, Lago hands the keys over to race driver Randy Pobst, who breaks down the differences between this car and the standard model.
