On this week’s episode of “Ignition,” Angus MacKenzie heads to Molsheim, France to visit the birthplace of the Bugatti Veyron. After seeing the intricate work that goes into building just one Veyron, he gains a greater appreciation for one of the most expensive cars ever made; however, things are really put into perspective after taking the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse for a drive.
Powered by a quad-turbocharged 16-cylinder engine, the Veyron churns more than 1000 hp, allowing it to accelerate to 60 mph in about 2.7 seconds, with a top speed beyond 250 mph. Numbers like this don’t come cheap though, and we can see why. Robots are absent at the Bugatti artist’s workshop in France, as 14 people help assemble one Veyron in one week. Want polished aluminum panels? That’s going to set you back $590,000 because only six are made a year.
There are only a handful of places in the world where you can even begin to explore the staggering performance envelope of the Veyron, and MacKenzie heads to one of them: the Ehra-Lessien just outside of Wolfsburg, Germany. This is where the 1200-hp Grand Sport Vitesse became the world’s fastest convertible, setting a record at 254.04 mph. MacKenzie later experiences the record-setting car by taking a lap around the track.
