By now we’re very familiar with the specifications and performance potential of the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder, but a new video from Porsche allows an even closer look at the supercar’s various driving modes. In this video, cutaway graphics highlight how the car’s 4.6-liter V-8 engine and twin electric motors work together to optimize fuel efficiency or provide maximum performance.
The 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid supercar that boasts a total of 887 hp from its electric motors and gasoline engine. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission directs the engine’s power to the rear wheels, but the front electric motor propels the forward wheels for all-wheel drive. When conserving fuel, the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder can travel for 18 miles on electrical power alone; alternatively, Porsche says it can rocket to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds.
Speaking of performance, the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder managed to set an astonishing 6 minute 57 second lap time around the Nürburgring. Even more astonishing, though, are claims from Porsche that the car could go even faster if the company and driver had been given more time at the Nordschleife.
