This week on Head to Head, two German sport sedans with supercar-beating performance take on the dyno, the track, and the mountain road to see which offers the better combination of sport, luxury,and performance.
These particular versions of the 2014 BMW M5 and the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG are equipped with special packages that boost performance even further, called the Competition Package for the Beemer and the S Model for the AMG. These performance packages bring with them more power, slightly revised suspension tuning, mild styling tweaks, and, in the case of the E63 AMG S Model, Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.
At the track, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Model puts down the better straight-line numbers, with a 3.4-second 0-60 mph run compared with the BMW M5’s 3.7-second run. However, in the braking, figure-eight, and skidpad exercise, both sedans turned in identical numbers.
On the dyno, Motor Trend‘s Jonny Lieberman and Michael Shaffer discover that both manufacturers have underestimated the power output of these super sedans, Mercedes more so than BMW. After taking into account the drivetrain loss, Lieberman calculates that the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is making 636 hp and the BMW M5 is making 598 hp, compared with the official ratings of 577 hp and 575 hp, respectively.
Finally, a quick run on a curvy mountain road differentiates the driving character of the BMW and the Mercedes. Lieberman and Shaffer explore the wide customizability of the BMW’s various steering, engine, and suspension settings, confirming the verdict of last week’s Ignition video that rated the BMW M5 Competition Package as a significant improvement over the standard M5. The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG also impresses with its lighter, more dynamic feel and the all-wheel-drive traction that helps the monstrous V-8 engine to pull the car out of corners.
