Utah Man Wins Lamborghini Murcielago on Saturday; Crashes it Six Hours Later

Thousands of people entered Maverik gas station’s “Joe Schmo to Lambo” contest in Utah. David Dopp happened to beat out the other nine finalists at the halftime show of a BYU football game at Lavelle Edwards Stadium in November.

Dopp wasn’t able to take delivery until he had acquired insurance for the six-figure exotic. After a ceremony last Saturday at a Maverik gas station in Dopp’s hometown of Santaquin, Utah, he was finally handed the keys to the sports car by a nonprofit organization.

“I couldn’t believe I won it,” David Dopp told reporters from KSL, a local Utah television news station.

“It was kind of weird seeing a more expensive car than a house sitting in the same spot,” Dopp continued. “Usually, you see these sitting outside of mansions, not outside a little house here in Santaquin.”

Shortly after taking possession of the Murcielago, Dopp did what any auto enthusiast would do: show the cars off to family and friends. However, six hours after he started hooning the bright green supercar, Dopp ended up off the road and in a field.

“Yeah, I got it on Saturday and I wrecked it on Saturday,” Dopp told KSL.

“We were coming up a hill, going around a corner; and as soon as we came up the hill, we either hit some black ice or loose gravel or something, and all of a sudden we just started spinning,” Dopp said. “We ended up in a field, and I back-ended a couple of fence posts.”

“My heart pretty much fell out,” Annette Dopp, David’s wife, told reporters, after David’s passenger called her. “They said they were OK, then (came), you know, that feeling when your heart drops and you’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh. What do we do now?'”

After the crash, the Lamborghini wasn’t drivable, so a tow company was called to rescue it from the field. One tire was punctured in the crash and the body received damage to the front and passenger side. The car will be taken to a Las Vegas body shop to assess the damage – and give Dopp’s insurance company a quote.

“That’s what insurance is for,” Dopp said in the news clip. “It’s going to be all nice and pretty here in a couple of months, I’m sure.”

Dopp also won $5000 worth of driving lessons from Miller Motorsports Park – maybe he should have enrolled before hooning the 640 horsepower supercar. Check out the videos of Dopp’s big win and big crash below.
