UPDATE: Apparently officials retroactively stripped Foust of the victory, saying he was nudged off-track by a competitor prior to crossing the finish line. As a result, they’ve now slapped him with a DNF. Foust’s official statement is as follows:
“I am incredibly disappointed in the Global Rally Championship’s decision to DNF the Rockstar Fiesta two days after confirming our second-place finish. The GRC is breaking new grounds in automotive racing with this ruling stating, that essentially, competitors can DNF the car in front of them by pushing them off the track over the final stretch before the finish line. It is unsafe and displays a complete lack of understanding of automotive racing from a steward in his first weekend in the sport. In 16 years of racing, I’ve never disagreed with a racing organization’s call more. What it does mean is that I’ll have to push hard at X Games if we’re going to keep the GRC win from going to the flying Finn Marcus Gronholm.”
Few people have beaten Finnish rally driver Marcus Grönholm, but Tanner Foust, host of Top Gear USA, can now join the club of those who have. Foust was able to overtake Grönholm during the head-to-head SuperRally competition last week, during the Global Rallycross Pikes Peak finale — which, Ford’s happy to point out, was capped off by Fiestas sweeping the podium.
“Once again it was Marcus and I in the final,” says Foust. “He beat me off the line so I went really wide to get a good line into the corner and I squeezed him into the second corner. It just happened to work.”
Luck changed for Foust on Saturday when he got tangled up with Swede Michael Jernberg during the battle to overtake Grönholm right at the finish line. Initially there was confusion over whether Foust or Jernberg had crossed the finish line during the crash, which would have scored them second and third place podium spots. After the dust settled and race officials finished reviewing official ESPN TV race footage they announced Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins second-place and privateer Stephan Verdier third-place; both drivers past the disabled cars which had stopped just short of the finish line.
The Global RallyCross is a three-event series is a combination of circuit racing, off-road racing and rally competition with the ‘Last Chance’ final event held at the Pikes Peak international raceway in Colorado Springs.
