Urgent Voluntary Recall Issued for 1.6-liter Ford Escape, Fusion Models

The fourth recall related to its 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, Ford voluntarily issued an notice Friday afternoon for Escape and Fusion models equipped with the engine, which continues to be plagued with issues of overheating and engine fires. More than 89,000 Escapes and Fusions equipped with the smaller EcoBoost are subject to the recall.

The latest recall concerns engine overheating, with warning messages appearing in the vehicle information display, and some reports of engine fires. Ford is urging owners of the affected models to contact their dealer immediately. Ford will cover costs related to overheating-related transportation.

Approximately 73,320 Escape and 15,833 Fusions are affected by the recall. Affected vehicles can be identified by an “X” in the eighth character of the vehicle identification number in Escape models, and an “R” in Fusion models. U.S. customers are urged to call 866-436-7332, and Canadian customers to call 888-222-7814. Owners can also log in to, click on the “Support” tab, select “View Notices and Recalls” and input their vehicle’s VIN number to see if it is subject to the recall.

As with the prior three recalls, only vehicles equipped with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine are affected. 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter models are not affected.
