U.K. to Get TRD Version of Toyota GT86 in 2013

Toyota has confirmed to Autocar that a TRD version of the GT86 is headed to the U.K. The Toyota GT86 TRD concept was shown at the Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this year, and will debut in Europe at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Unlike the GT86 TRD model shown in Tokyo, the U.K. version will not receive any suspension upgrades. It will, however, receive a wheel and tire upgrade, bigger brakes, a new exhaust, and revised styling.

Black 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/40 R18 Dunlop Sport Maxx tires replace the standard car’s 17-inch alloys with Prius-grade 215/45 R17 tires. The car gets upgraded brake discs and calipers, which should enhance stopping ability. TRD limited power-adders to a new air filter and sports exhaust with quad exhaust tip – good for a 10-hp bump in output from the 2.0-liter boxer-four. The TRD body kit includes new front and rear bumpers with a front lower air dam and rear valance, flared wheel arches, side skirts, and decklid spoiler. Finally, a short-throw shifter for the six-speed manual and TRD badges round out the changes.

Similar plans have not yet been announced for Scion’s mechanically identical FR-S coupe, but as we previously reported, TRD performance parts for the rear-drive two-door will be coming soon to Scion dealerships. FR-S project manager Yoshinori Sasaki also hoped to release a new variant of the car each year, which could mean the time will be ripe for a TRD model in the U.S. by 2013. At the time of this writing, calls to Scion have not been returned.

The Toyota GT86 TRD will be shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. Check out the photos of the Toyota GT86 TRD from the Tokyo Auto Salon in the gallery below.
