Twice DTM champion Mattias Ekströmearned a one-race NASCAR Sprint Cup seat after impressing the Red Bull Racingduringrecent testing, the energy drink company announced. He’ll make his debut on June 18 through 20 at Infineon Raceway.
“We were worried about getting him up to speed in a day,” said Jay Frye, Red Bull Racing Team’s vice president and general manager in a press release. “He was up to speed in an hour — less than an hour. He’s a phenomenal talent.”
According to Red Bull, the Swede has had an interest in NASCAR for quite some time. Once Red Bull had an opportunity to give Ekström a chance in the car — and Audi secondarily gave its blessing — the young gun flew to the States and jumped on track.
Ekström will replace Casey Mears, himself a replacement for the ill Brian Vickers. The main challenge, among other smaller things to get acquainted with, will be to race against 47 other competitors over the scheduled 110 laps. In DTM, there are only 18 cars battling for first.
Ekström is currently fourth in DTM and has racked up 14 career victories.
