When we last saw the Toyota GT86 GT4 racecar, it was campaigning in Britain’s grueling 24 Hours of Silverstone with only a handful more horsepower than the stock car’s 200. The GT86 GT4 is back again, and but with a new twist: it’s much more powerful than before.
Exactly how much more horsepower is unclear at this point. The 2.0-liter, direct-injected boxer four-cylinder from the stock Toyota GT86 (also known as the Scion FR-S) received a thorough once-over by the engineers at England’s Nicholson McLaren Engines. Nicholson McLaren added a turbocharger–a big one–that ups the power from its current, adequate 200 hp to an impressive 360-400. Nicholson McLaren says that it’ll settle on a final figure after further endurance testing.
Endurance is, obviously, a big question with the GT86 GT4, because of its history. The car, which is assembled by British racing house GPRM, waded into battle last year with a classic paintjob and walked away with some impressive achievements–eighth overall and third in the GT4 class. GPRM says that the new GT86 GT4 reflects the lessons it learned campaigning last year’s car, and that it’s currently in talks with a racing team hoping to enter the car into the Avon Tyres British GT Championship.
We hope the new GT4 brings home some awards, because the benchmark has been set pretty high with the GT86. Last year, two GT86s took home first-place trophies in their respective classes of the ADAC 24 Hours of Nurburgring, and Gazoo Racing (which won one of those trophies) announced it’s hoping to go for gold again this year.
