Toyota Teases Hybrid-R Concept Ahead Of Frankfurt Show

Hybrid sports car coming to Frankfurt.

Toyota has released a single teaser image previewing the Hybrid-R concept that will be fully revealed next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The logo is an update of the stylized S used in the Hybrid Synergy Drive badges on current Toyota cars, but with an R to signify Racing.

There are essentially no details on the concept car so far, but Toyota says the Hybrid-R will show how its Le Mans racing technology can be adapted to road cars. The Toyota TS030 Le Mans racer uses a hybrid powertrain comprising a 3.4-liter V-8 engine and a pair of electric motors. The setup is called the Toyota Hybrid System-Racing.

The pronouncement probably signals that Toyota will show off a concept car that uses electric motors to augment a gasoline engine, resulting in improved performance and better fuel efficiency. A similar technique has already been employed by the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari hypercars, and a hybrid powertrain will be at the heart of the 2015 Acura NSX.

Toyota promises more information on the Hybrid-R concept will be revealed in the coming weeks.
