Toyota Debuts Etios Concepts, Seeks Big Piece of Small Market

Toyota is one of several major automakers interested in the small car segment in emerging markets. India is one the most sought-after new markets for cars. So it’s no surprise Toyota decided to debut the Etios sedan and hatchback at the 2010 New Delhi auto show. If all goes well, Toyota hopes to move 70,000 units per year.

To keep costs down, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private sought local suppliers. Reuters reports that nearly the entire body will come from India, though Toyota will import powertrains from Japan. While production specs are not available, in concept guise, Toyota showed the Etios sedan with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, while the hatchback showed a 1.2-liter gasoline engine.

Toyota isn’t the only automaker trying to make inroads in the hot Indian small car market, with Honda unveiling its own New Small Concept at the New Delhi show.

Toyota plans to produce the Etios in late 2010. The automaker also plans to export the compact to other markets.
