Tokyo 2011: Honda Shows EV-STER Electric Roadster Concept

Honda has pulled the wraps off its electric, rear-wheel-drive roadster at the Tokyo Motor Show. Called the EV-STER, the futuristic small car was teased earlier this month as a sporty roadster with minimal emissions.

The concept car uses carbon-fiber construction to keep weight low, although the EV-STER’s compact dimensions also preclude it from reaching the heavyweight class. A length of 140.5 inches and width of 59.1 inches give the EV-STER a slightly smaller footprint than that of the Fiat 500 hatchback; the EV-STER is just 43.3 inches tall, or about half a foot shorter than a Mazda MX-5.

The electric motor draws power from a 10 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides a claimed range of 99 miles per charge. Honda says acceleration to 37 mph takes 5.0 seconds, and that the EV-STER can reach a top speed of 99 mph.

The car’s open-top design features two large buttresses behind each seatback, intersecting character lines, plus a stubby and steeply raked windshield. The interior dispatches with a traditional steering wheel in favor of twin upright joysticks, which is said to contribute to the electric car’s intuitive, fun-to-drive nature. Screens on the center console and the instrument cluster display navigation and audio controls, as well as Internet access.

Honda hasn’t said whether the EV-STER is a prelude to a production car, admitting only that the company is “committed to developing sports models beyond the expectations of its customers.”
