Subaru’s Indiana Plant Celebrates 25 Years

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of its Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) plant, Subaru has a year of events planned. The automaker will kick off the events with an internal celebration for the plant’s more than 3600 employees.

“Today is an important milestone for SIA,” stated Tom Easterday, Executive Vice President, in a press release. “Since our incorporation on March 17, 1987, our mission has been to contribute to society through the growth of our company. Now, a quarter of a century later, we’ve stayed true to our mission, employing a record number of Associates, producing a record number of vehicles and continuing to lead the auto industry in quality, safety, and environmental stewardship.”

Subaru will hold its SIA 25th Anniversary Open House on Saturday, July 28. Visitors will be able to get “an up-close and in-depth look at the inner workings of” the plant– from the stamping presses and conveyors to the robots and engine plant where boxer engines are built, according to Subaru.

The Subaru Legacy sedan and Isuzu P’UP compact truck and Rodeo SUV were the first models to come off the assembly line after SIA was completed December 1988. Over the years, the Legacy has been a staple for the plant, but other models have come and gone. From 1994 to 2002, Isuzu built the Honda Passport – a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo SUV. In 2003, Subaru bought Isuzu’s interest for $1.00.

Toyota began building Camry sedans at SIA in 2007, to supplement production of the popular family sedan built for the North American market primarily at Toyota’s Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky plant. SIA is the only plant to have built cars for both Honda and Toyota. Today, SIA builds Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca models as well as the Toyota Camry.

SIA was the first U.S. auto plant to achieve zero landfill status, according to Subaru. Click here to learn about more upcoming events Subaru and SIA have planned for the community.
