Spotted: Mazda Verisa Compact Crossover

This compact crossover is having a bit of an identity crisis, with the front fascia from a current Mazda 2 inelegantly pasted onto the body of a last-generation 2. Our colleagues at Motor Trend spied the unusual amalgamation near Cologne, Germany.

The current Verisa is a tall hatchback-cum-crossover that was introduced in Japan in June 2004, which rides on essentially the same platform as the Mazda 2 (known as the Demio in Japan and some other markets) and the Ford Fiesta. It comes standard with a tiny-but-frugal 1.5-liter four-cylinder, and even has an optional all-wheel-drive system.

We’ve previously spied a Verisa driving through Flat Rock, Michigan, but there have never been any plans to sell the model in the U.S. or anywhere outside Japan. The appearance of this 2-slash-Verisa in Germany could mean Mazda wants to sell a similar model in the European market, or it could simply be a test mule in disguise. What do you think? Is this Japan-only crossover being prepared for sale in Europe?
