Spotted: 2012 BMW 6-series Coupe Testing With Sport Package

Even though the 2012 BMW 6 Series coupe won’t debut until much later this year, BMW appears to be testing a new appearance package for the car. Our colleagues at Motor Trend spotted this camouflage-clad 6 Series coupe wearing new lower air intakes and side skirts.

Although BMW’s trademark swirly patterns obscure much of the car’s front end, it’s clear that the front air intakes extend lower and have been enlarged, and there also are deeper side skirts.  Though they’re most likely designed with aesthetics in mind, it’s also possible these add-ons improve the car’s aerodynamic performance. We believe this is an optional M Sport package for the 6-series, rather than a new version of the high-performance BMW M6.

We had the chance to drive the redesigned 2012 BMW 650i convertible in January, which is equipped with a 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The coupe version will go on sale this fall with the same engine, and it may have an optional glass roof, like the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class. We’ve also seen spy photos of a BMW M6 convertible undergoing cold-weather testing, but we don’t expect that high-horsepower variant to debut for some time.
