Spied: Next-Generation Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster

The gullwinged SLS AMG may currently hog the spotlight, but as evidenced by new spy photos obtained by Motor Trend, Mercedes-Benz isn’t neglecting its fabled SL.

Rigid camouflage panels and awkward hood ribbing help obscure the new car’s true profile, but it’s easy to see much of the car’s revamp lies with its front fascia. Like the next-gen SLK caught testing earlier this year, the new SL wears a wide grille similar to that on the SLS.

Given a similar aperture was found on the “Design Sculpture” shown at the 2010 Detroit auto show, we wouldn’t be too surprised to see such a feature become part of Mercedes’ design ethic in the future.

The remainder of the SL prototype does seem to closely follow the current car, which was refreshed in 2008. That said, the car is heavily camouflaged, and its true form won’t be known until Mercedes-Benz pops the panels off and unveils the car to the world.

We’ve yet to hear exact timing, but expect to see the new drop-top Benz sometime next year.
