A little bit of camouflage over the front end wasn’t enough to confuse our colleagues at Motor Trend, who spotted the next-generation Ford Mondeo on a transport truck in Europe. While the Mondeo isn’t currently offered in the U.S., the next-gen Mondeo seen here will underpin a future version of the Ford Fusion.
We’ve known for a while that Ford will debut a new Fusion based on the European Mondeo platform in a few years’ time — probably for the 2013 model year. The car will likely lose its V-6 engine option in favor of fuel-efficient EcoBoost four-cylinders.
The latest iteration of Mondeo was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last summer. Now approaching its second decade of production, the Mondeo has been a strong seller for Ford in Europe, routinely drawing praise for its practicality, comfort, and entertaining driving dynamics. The diesel engines and wagon body styles that are popular in Europe are highly unlikely to be made available here.
When the new Fusion debuts, it won’t be the first time Ford has brought the Mondeo to our shores: a prior generation was sold as the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique in the 1990s. Head over to Motor Trend to check out the full set of spy photos.
