Spied: Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG Gains Mild Facelift

It’s odd to pair the words “change” and “Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen” in the same sentence. After all, the venerable G-Wagen has roamed the rocky trails and suburban streets of this planet for more than three decades with minimal revision. Yet it seems the engineers in Stuttgart may have a few mild tweaks in store, at least for the high-powered G55 AMG variant.

Our comrades at Motor Trend recently snapped a few G55 prototypes undergoing testing over in Europe. While the SUV’s shoebox profile remains unchanged, we can’t help but spot a few mild cosmetic tweaks. These Gs wear a slightly different grille insert, new wheel designs, and by the looks of the cobbled-up prototype part, an all-new front bumper.

The massive vents incorporated into this stand-in part lend credence to the notion that the latest G55 will follow AMG’s recent protocol, and ditch the massive 6.2-liter V-8 in favor of a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8. The new engine is suggested to produce close to 518 hp, which would make it slightly more powerful than the 6.2, despite the disparity in displacement.

Will this revised model make its way to the colonies? That remains to be seen. Mercedes-Benz yanked the G55 from its portfolio for the 2012 model year; though this could open the door for model to rejoin the stable in the near future, there’s still a chance Benz could opt instead to make the AMG-tuned Wagen an European exclusive.
